Individual empowerment and self-determination have always been strong components of the organization. Directed by Jermaine Smith, the organization was conceived and organized to address the social, intellectual, and recreational needs of the Charlotte, North Carolina community, to counteract failure, and to assist inthesuccessful transition to life in a positive environment. We teach character matters. Acknowledging the needs that exist in the Charlotte area, T.A.P.S. (Teaching Athletes Plans for Success), Inc. will serve as a well-coordinated effort of community based services, including youth mentoring, after school programs, physical development, socialization, nutrition education, and academic enrichment. Currently, an integral component of our strategic plan is the expansion of our T.A.P.S. (Teaching Athletes Plans for Success), Inc. performing arts program. With the expansion of our performing arts program, our organization’s goals will be accomplished through implementation of stimulating activities and materials that are organized around a well-developed prospectus.
Benefits Of School-Based Sports
High fives. School spirit. Team pride. School-based sports programs can bring out noticeable positive reactions and behaviors in teens. But what are the deeper benefits from these programs? What are we losing when schools are forced to cut these programs? The most extensive research has come in a report called “Relationships Between Youth Sport Participation and Selected Health Risk Behaviors from 1999 to 2007” published in the Journal of School Health. This report analyzes many different factors, including race, age, and gender, and behaviors, including eating habits, sexual activity, and drug risks. The report found that many groups experienced overall benefits, apart from some subgroups. Overall, the study found that advantages of sports include: • Weight control • Problem-solving skills • Self-esteem • Social competence • Academic achievement And sports can lead to reduced rates of: • Juvenile arrests • Teen pregnancies • School dropout (Taliaferro, 2010) In addition to these social and emotional benefits, sports can also bring about intangible benefits to the school and community as a whole. “Sports also create important opportunities for students to contribute to the school community, which may cultivate an increased commitment to, or identification with, school and school values.” (Taliaferro, 2010)
T.A.P.S understands that sports options, enhance stability within your student body. This is due to the development of relationship building that team-oriented environments create. Our goal is to create an environment that teaches sportsmanship, confidence, drive, determination, fundamentals, teamwork, coachability, unselfishness, and character. We believe that sports programs should create feeder program that prepare younger athletes for what they will experience at the middle and high school levels. Student/Athletes are able to grow and develop under one umbrella. T.A.P.S will also assist you in selecting the proper coaches for each sport. The development of athletes must be held in high regard, and coaching is a key ingredient.
T.A.P.S Intramural Sports is a coed sports program offered to all students in grades 1st-12th at Charter Schools. Students will participate in team sport competitions against other students and schools each season. We will offer a variety of sports including basketball, flag football, and soccer for the 2022-2023 school year. These sports provide a great opportunity for physical activity while promoting wellness, healthy competition and friendship.
Sports season will have two practices per week that will run approximately one hour in length. Days and Times will also be determined per location on the availability of the coach for that team.•
It will be made clear to coaches that everyone gets to play each game. These sports at the intramural level are to help students understand the basic skills and rules of the games and to enjoy athletics with their peers. • All Coaches will be required to have a background check.
Grade Combined Groups (Co-Ed): 1st – 2nd Grades, 3rd – 4th Grades, 5th – 6th Grades, 7th – 8th Grades, 9th – 12th Grades
